Start-up Time Reduction for a Mineral Assets Measuring System Saves $2.3M

Background

A field mineral mapping system had significant, costly non-productive time. Existing start-up time of 100 seconds was excessive for an activity that is repeated several hundred times per week. A start-up time goal of 60 seconds would allow more billable time for an expensive asset.

Solution

The software was analyzed for waste and opportunities for streamlining. VOC data was collected for all parties impacted, as was FMEA, eliminating risk for unintended consequences resulting from the leaning of the software/firmware. New standards were developed and disseminated to field personnel, first in a controlled environment and ultimately globally.

Results

Start-up time to was reduced to 59 seconds, resulting in annual savings of $2,323,000 over the entire set of field units globally. A similar approach will now be examined for other older, but similar, field assets and could result in further millions in savings.
