Background
A well-known biologics research company was facing increasing demand for analysis to support both their clinical trials and pre-trial research. The increase in output would place significant pressure on their labs, which were already tight on space. The executive over these areas had seen 5S applied in similar spaces and thought it would help address their challenges. She was interested in a pilot with an added focus on safety and employee development, elements that were part of their established corporate values.
Solution
An initial visit and on-site assessment confirmed that 5S would support the lab needs. A pilot plan was created to free up underutilized lab space, develop internal resources for future 5S work, and to review safety in all pilot areas. Firefly provided training sessions and coaching support to ensure proper preparation for the upcoming 5S sessions in each of the three selected pilot areas.
Results
Each pilot area had unique challenges ranging from underused equipment taking up space to workbench owners resistant to change. With an eye toward change management and long-term success, Firefly removed large volumes of unnecessary equipment and consumables and significantly improved lab layout and efficiency. Pilot participants described the initiatives as a home run and have begun laying out plans for expanding and sustaining their 5S program.
