Lab Redesign Reduces Capital Costs 75% and Upgrades Facilities

Background

Technology labs focused on product development and R&D of advanced technology were scheduled to spend $2.5MM in upgrades. Their goal was to improve productivity and to become a world-class showcase of technological development to be highlighted during customer visits.

Solution

Over the course of the Design Kaizen events, lab leaders and technicians convened with involved scientists and engineers to identify necessary components of the proposed lab. Participants were instructed in Voice of the Customer, Concept Development, Analytical Hierarchy Process, Pugh Concept Selection, and 5S.

Results

The team created a master plan that reduced capital costs by 75% to $0.6 MM. They also successfully reduced their anticipated footprint by 25,000 square feet while honoring the goal of updating all labs to world-class status. A detailed design for the first lab was created as a part of the implementation plan, as was the scheduling of the capital project work and the incorporation of 5S principles.
